Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do, translated as “The way of hand & foot” is considered the world’s most popular Martial Art. The art originates from Korea and borrows techniques from the arts of Karate and Kung Fu. Tae Kwon Do also became an official Olympic Sport in 1988.
There are two type of Tae kwon Do schools; Traditional and sports-oriented schools.
Traditional schools, like ours, focus more on personal development and holistic life skills development, whereas sports-oriented schools will focus more on the sparring (sport fighting) aspect and will spend less time on self-defense skills or pre-arranged patterns called “Poomse” or “Forms.”
The art of Tae Kwon Do heavily favors kicking, which is one of the main differences from the art of Karate, which focuses more on hand techniques. Both the arts of Tae Kwon Do and Karate use the same basic blocks, strikes and kicks in practice and even share some of the same patterns or forms but the biggest noticeable differences will be in the sport- fighting aspects.
Tae Kwon Do uses very simple, straight lines of attack and very simple, effective self-defense techniques that can be learned by anyone at any age (hence its popularity around the world).
Tae Kwon Do is also a very aerobic style of Martial Art that is excellent for losing weight, toning & shaping muscles, and is excellent at helping students to develop confidence in themselves, since it takes much less time to become proficient in, as opposed to arts such as Kung Fu and Hapkido, which can take many years to become proficient in.
There are typically two governing organizations of Tae Kwon Do.
The WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) and the ITF (International Tae Kwon Do Federation).
Level 10 Martial Arts is not directly affiliated with either organization but teaches forms from the WTF system.
