Kung Fu
Kung Fu is known as the “Mother of all Martial Arts” and is
considered to be a Chinese Martial Art, although there are varieties taught in
other countries as well.
The term “Kung Fu” means “The Skill” or “The Discipline” (a
more accurate term for Kung Fu is WU SHU meaning “War Art”).
Kung Fu is generally divided into 2 categories-
Northern & Southern. While not 100% accurate most Northern Styles of Kung
Fu focus more on kicking, while most southern styles focus more on hand
techniques.
There are also 2 sub-divisions in Kung Fu- Internal &
External. Internal styles focus more on the development of one’s “internal
power” and are generally very fluid and graceful. External styles focus more on
the development of “External” power using a person’s body and muscles to
generate power.
The system that is taught at Level 10 Martial Arts is from
the Northern Shaolin Long Fist/Mantis style (although we do teach a few of the
southern-style forms to balance things out).
Our students learn the 4 core weapons of Kung Fu (Long Staff, Broad Sword, Spear, Straight Sword) as part of earning their black belt. Additional weapons are taught after 1st degree black belt, such as the 3-sectional staff, the chain whip and the Kwan Dao.
Weapons’ training enhances the student’s hand-eye
coordination, tones muscles and teaches how to use the principles of the
different weapons to use household objects for self-protection in an emergency
situation.
Students begin learning traditional Kung Fu and weaponry once enrolled in our school's Masters Training Program (a commitment to train all the way to 2nd Degree Black Belt)
At the upper levels of training our students also learn the
internal art of Tai Chi Quan to help balance out their external training.
Master Theros has published a book on Kung Fu that is available at Amazon.com.
Kung Fu is the most beautiful and complex of all the martial arts and a student who has studied other arts will eventually be interested in learning about Kung Fu, much like a person will eventually become interested in the history of his or her own family tree.
Martial Artists who study Kung Fu gain a much deeper understanding of the martial arts, since all other martial arts have their roots in Chinese Kung Fu.
Kung Fu is taught as an integrated art in our system and is taught to beginners all the way up through the black belt levels, where advanced Kung Fu forms, weapons and concepts are taught. We do not offer Kung Fu training as a separate program in our school but students may earn separate rank in this art, if desired, once they achieve their frist degree black belt.
Learning Kung Fu Will Provide the Following Benefits:
1. A deep understanding of proper martial arts fundamentals
2. More gracefulness in movement, better balance and coordination
3. Strong cardiovascular system and lots of physical endurance
4. Open a door-way to the past (1500-2000 year history--as compared to the 55-60 year old history of Tae Kwon Do, the 60-80 year history of Hapkido and Aikido or the 600-800 year old history of Karate.)
5. Learn a variety of Chinese weapons that will further enhance their self-defense skills (plus they are a lot of fun to work with)
6. Develop very strong legs and core that will equate to optimum health
7. Learn to breathe properly which will give increased levels of energy and power
8. Learn an art form that is very rare. There are many more Tae Kwon Do and Karate schools than there are Kung Fu schools.
